📢 New Chapter Begins at The FYI! 🎉

After a comprehensive search and much dua, we are delighted to welcome Danyal Khan as the new Executive Director of The Family & Youth Institute, beginning February 3, 2025.

Introducing Our New Executive Director

Danyal brings extensive experience in mental health advocacy, organizational leadership, and community engagement, leveraging his Masters in Social Work with a specialization in Non-Profit Management. His career spans a range of impactful roles, including National Director of Muslim Family Services at ICNA Relief, CEO of the Islamic Association of Raleigh, and Executive Director of the Islamic Society of Allentown.  He has led transformative initiatives that bridge faith and mental health, developed stronger teams and processes across organizations, and fostered meaningful collaborations within diverse communities.

At The FYI, we are dedicated to advancing Muslim mental health through research, education, and empowering our communities. Under Danyal’s leadership, we are confident that our work will continue to grow, reaching new heights of impact and innovation, insha’Allah.

We also take this moment to express immense gratitude to Dr. Sameera Ahmed for her extraordinary contributions to The FYI over the past 19 years. As the founder and visionary behind the organization, Dr. Sameera has transformed The FYI into the premier Muslim mental health organization in the country. Her dedication and vision have laid a strong base for the future. She will continue to serve on The FYI’s Board of Directors and support the organization’s growth.

Danyal is dedicated to continuing The FYI’s mission.

“As someone who has benefited from The FYI’s resources throughout my career, it is a genuine honor to step into this role and build upon Dr. Sameera’s incredible legacy. We are at a pivotal time when the need for quality Muslim mental health resources has never been greater. I am deeply committed to working with The FYI team to foster understanding, resilience, and growth within our communities. Together, and by the will of Allah (swt), we can create a future where Muslim practitioners, community leaders, and families can nurture growth with compassion, cultural understanding, and the wisdom of our faith. May we serve with Ihsan (excellence) & Ikhlas (sincerity).”

We ask Allah (swt) to bless this transition, guide Danyal in his new role with wisdom, strength, and sincerity, and grant The FYI continued success in its vital mission to serve the mental health needs of the Muslim community and beyond.

Please join us in welcoming Danyal Khan to the team!

The Family & Youth Institute

Zakat eligibility of The FYI

The Family & Youth Institute, or The FYI, is a well-known Muslim organization in the United States. It works to promote mental health and wellness by strengthening and empowering individuals, families, and communities through research and education. It has been working for many years to bring Islamic perspectives to understanding and promoting mental health in our communities.

It is dedicated to serving and supporting Muslims – safeguarding our deen, our families, and our future generations. Therefore, the work of The FYI comes in the category of ‘fi sabeelillah’ or the Path of Allah, within the eight categories where Zakat money can be used.

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah, and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah, And Allah, is Knowing and Wise.”
(Al-Tawbah 9:60)

According to scholars who widen the meaning of fee sabeelillah to include any activities that promote Islamic growth, The FYI is indeed eligible to receive part of the Zakat funds for its programs and services. I urge Muslims in America to support this organization through their donations, general charity, and through their Zakat. I ask Allah swt to strengthen and guide The FYI to continue its good work in supporting Muslims.
